company auditions

Hi everyone. I've been watching this site for at least a year and it's wonderful, but this is my first actual post. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has insight as to the process of going through company auditions... what type of photos to have done, what contacts should be made... that type of thing. If anyone has any suggestions or advice that would be great. Thanks again

Hello Jen, welcome to the Young Dancers' forum on Ballet Alert! Online :( We are glad that you have "delurked" and decided to join us!

For company auditions you will need a nice little packet put together with resumé and photos. There should be a head shot and two or three dance poses of your choice. Professional photos would be best for company auditions, but not just any professional photographer. They MUST be taken by a dance photographer, and it would be best to have a teacher there to pose and correct you. It takes a LOT of pictures to get two or three really good ones, so patience and hard work are involved here.

As far as contacts, sometimes your teacher might be able to set you up with the opportunity to take some company classes with certain companies, and of course there are open auditions held by every company. Your school should receive the information on the company auditions, but if they don't then check Dance Magazine, Pointe Magazine, and visit the websites of each of the companies you are interested in trying for. Contact each company and find out whether they want your information sent ahead or brought to the audition.

Regarding necessary dance photos for company auditions, in addition to a head shot and arabesque, what do you think would be additionally preferred? If there's a nice jump that shows strength, does that work? Or something that shows some character. Or should it be something more traditional like tendue-2nd position?

Mom1, this is the YD board, but also this thread is 7 years old. Your question is a good one, but it needs to be asked on a different forum. Please ask it on either a parents forum or Cross Talk. I will be happy to offer my thoughts there, but this thread has to be closed.
