Guest Meliss
Hi... i am 19 years old and my whole life i have loved dancing! I danced when i was like 6 for a year or 2 but because of money i had to drop out, i just recently got back into ballet. My teacher says i have "good feet" whatever that means and that i have potential, she even asked me to be in Nutcracker, which i am honored. But i am extremely self conciouse. I am not overweight, but i am no where near ballerina weight (i know you don' t like weight questions... it's not questions i was just stating) and i have a faily big chest which makes dancing hard, and sort of embarrassing... is it pointless for me to get my hopes up? i know everyone will say " if you love it then do it, not matter what" i don't know, i'm just skeptical i guess, any advice on things i can do to improve would be a big help, i want to go on point in the next couple of years so i want to get stronger, i guess i don't believe in myself enough as a dancer to think i could ever be good... is it possible? -melissa Link to comment
Mel Johnson
Hi Melissa. This is a tough one. I don't like saying to somebody, "forget it", but if you had your eyes on a career, nineteen is just out of the question for what is essentially a beginner to go to the employable category. This is not, mind you, saying that you can't take ballet and work to improve sufficiently to have a performing outlet with a local civic company; I've seen several adult beginners do that, and they have a lot of fun. But if you were looking for a career, this isn't it, sorry! Link to comment
Guest Meliss
thank you so much for your replies! i definately know that i could never be a professional But i am theater major and dream to some day to Broadway, i sing and and act and i hope that i will be able to dance for broadway too because i know it helps to have ballet background. thanks again!!!! -melissa Link to comment
Mel Johnson
OK, now that could work! Ballet as an adjunct study to musicom specialization could prove quite valuable. Enjoy! Link to comment
Guest Jhora
I am 17 and in exactly the same boat as you are in....although I have moved up quickly through my technique classes, and gone en pointe, I dont consider a national company as an option. However, I'v had some very serious discussion with my teachers and the director of my school, and there are a whole lot of other jobs out there, you could own a studio, join an local company, choreograph, be a notator (sp), be a set designer...and of course theres always Broadway! Good Luck, ad, well not to be cliché but if you shoot for the moon- even if you miss you land amoungst the stars....so train yourself like you want to be in a major company, even if its not a career goal, because the training is very useful *Email address edited out by moderator. Hopefuldancer
Its possible! It really is! In my opinion, yeah, some companies still have that "Ballerina" look engraved in their acceptance lists... But I have to mention that I saw a dancer-not too long ago- who was a professional/teacher. And she was HUGE. I mean HUUGGEE! But you know what? Her dancing and the look on her face- brilliant and shining- caught the eyes of me before her body. Also- about having a late start. I'm not exaggerating or lying.. But I was a late starter(late starters are always the ones "driven to dance").. I started in November in a recreational class. I practiced and stretched 24/7 even though I only had one class a week. By July I skipped three levels of ballet, being put in with girls who had danced since they were tods. And I, along with another girl, are said to be the best. By October I learned how to do double pirouettes en pointe.. cleanly. That shows you how long it took me to catch up. Ever since my first ballet class with my SWEET and INSPIRING teacher, I fell in love with ballet. And from there on I continue to learn new things. Now you may not progress THAT quick.. But don't ever let anyone tell you that you cannot follow your dream. You really CAN be anything you want! You just have to put your heart to it! Link to comment
