Guest dance4life87
for extra classes to help me in dance which do you think would be the best to take to help me out? I take one pilates class, should I take more of those? or, should I take some yoga classes? or anything else, I was thinking kickboxing would be fun but i think that yoga would be more beneficial/helpful (i dont know if thats the word to use though), for ballet what do you guys think? or, are their better classes to take to help ballet then those? Mel Johnson
Lay off the kickboxing! Things involving contact with the feet can be very very dangerous for a dancer. That's why soccer is problematical! Do you take modern? If you don't add another ballet technique class, maybe modern would be right for you to take up at this time. Link to comment
Guest dance4life87
My ballet studio offers modern...except I dont exactly know what it is, or what it does for you, would you mind telling me what it helps you with or basically just like what it is? Link to comment
Perfect Performer
I Have heard that Modern is a form of Jazz. But I'm not exactly sure though. I Have heard that is a lot of fun. Link to comment
Mel Johnson
No, Mary, Modern Dance is not like jazz. Modern Dance is a form of dance as practiced by Martha Graham, Paul Taylor, Merce Cunningham, and the like. It was originally conceived as a reaction against classical ballet, but now is systematized and regularized with its own vocabulary and way of working. It is very useful for ballet dancers to study, as it increases your ability to work outside the ballet vocabulary and placement, although much is similar. It can be a lot of fun to study, too.
