Guest Jeujeucda
Hi all, Do you yawn in class? I noticed last night that I tend to yawn a few times during barre exercises! And it's not that I 'm tired, cuz I'm sure wide awake and paying close attention to the teacher and trying hard! It's really odd, I don't yawn before nor after class, not even during center work, just the barre... Am I wierd? Jeujeucda Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted November 7, 2002 Administrators Report Share Posted November 7, 2002 Some people have a tendency to do this if the air circulation in the room is not good, however, for whatever reason you do it, you much learn to stop! It IS controllable. What would you think if you saw the teacher yawning? I feel the same way when I see a student do it, and I find it rude and unnecessary. Quote Link to comment
Guest Lolly
My science teacher at school told me that yawning is due to not breathing properly. So the reason we yawn when tired is because the body sort of forgets to breath as it is fatigued. So we yawn to get a big intake of breath and therefore oxygen. Maybe if you are yawning when you aren't tired it means you are not breathing properly? Quote Link to comment
Xena
Whatever the reason,it is rude. If you feel a yawn coming on, grab your towel or force your mouth to stay kind of closed  I got totally ripped to shreds by one of my ballet teachers when I was 16 because I yawned, and I also got told off in front of an entire lecture hall of chem students by my professor because I yawned, even thoguh I wasn't tired...not nice... Jaana Heino
Some people also have the tendency to yawn when they are nervous, though I don't quite figure out why. Might be related to the breathing thing, of course. I have this problem, but I've solved it by learning to yawn my mouth closed. It's not difficult at all, and cannot be noticed from outside of me (I've checked with a mirror). It feels sort of like taking a deep breath with the back of my mouth in a certain position. Guest Jeujeucda
Wow, yes, I know it's rude. I hate it when I feel it coming, but I've never just open wide and let it out. I always cover and try to swallow it back. (Ms. Leigh, I hope this is what you mean by controllable? Cuz I can't see how else to control a yawn...) I'm asking if anyone else has this pattern or know why that's happening, because it's very definitely a pattern -- I don't yawn the rest of the day, I don't yawn when skating, I don't yawn before, after, or during center work -- but I DO yawn during the barre part of ballet class! And it's not because I'm tired or bored (because I most certainly am not.) Garyecht
Amen Jaana. Many moons ago I used to be a bicycle racer and many were the times when I was yawning at the starting line for a race. I certainly wasn’t tired or sleepy. Just nervous energy expressing itself. Fortunately I don’t get that nervous in ballet class. Quote Link to comment
Jaana Heino
Jeujeu, I don't so much try to stop the yawn coming, as I have found that pretty hopeless. I just let it come, but control my face so that it doesn't show. I don't feel that's disrespectful, as it is more like taking a deep breath to calm myself than being bored, and no one can see it anyway. Quote Link to comment
Mel Johnson
Yawning is brought on by a slight oxygen deficit in the system, and so is involuntary. You can "mask" it, but it goes on just the same. Hiccuping is also caused by another sort of oxygen deficit, or rather a carbon dioxide surplus. That's really hard to conceal during class, but nobody thinks of it as rude. It's just really tough if you're Aurora, and you start going "hic" during the Rose Adagio!;) Quote Link to comment
Rio
*yawns* I can't control yawns. Sometimes, if you try mask it, you look even more ridiculous, so I would rather apologise for it. If I have to read out loud, then the yawns come on. AT school, I used to get bad marks for reading, because I was yawning the whole time!! Some medications also make me yawn! (and I've been yawning non-stop since reading these posts ) Rio Quote Link to comment
Guest Anders
I regularly yawn in class, particularly during allegro. I'm sure it's a breathing thing. How do I avoid it? Hyperventilate prior to jumping? Quote Link to comment
Mel Johnson
For something so ordinary, relatively little is known in depth about yawning, because few people consider it a problem. The National Institute of Health has this much on it, anyway: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/ar...icle/003096.htm Quote Link to comment
Guest mic31
Garyecht I used to race as well. I found that I yawned on the start line too. Mainly because I was focussing in on my race plan and forcing myself to stay focused and calm and keeping my heart rate down with shallow breathing Quote Link to comment
dancepig
Reading this thread is making me yawn! It is contagious, and I try to hide it when I find myself doing it, but after reading this thread I found myself yawning so much my hubby told me I looked tired and he thought I should go to bed, it's only 6:30 p.m.! Guest Jeujeucda
Thanks for all the comments. I'm guessing that maybe I'm not breathing well enough during barre exercises... I know that when I'm concentrating really hard on something physical, often I stop breathing regularly! Especially when I'm trying to balance on demi-points on one foot, I quit breathing cuz I'm trying so hard to stay there And so the moment we relax a bit to watch the instructor give a new set of instructions, I yawn sometimes. Thanks for the link, Mr. Johnson! Fortunately I think I can safely say I'm not on the verge of a heart attack, bleeding of the aorta, nor abnormal drowsiness yet... ;) Jeujeucda Quote Link to comment
