Guest boydancer05
Does anybody know of any summer programs that offer really good men's technique? My school that I go to now has it, but I think I wanna go away this summer and I wanna start looking early, Thanks. Quote Link to comment
citibob
What are you looking for in terms of really good men's technique? Most of the technique is the same either way. Quote Link to comment
Guest boydancer05
I'm not sure but I know that different teachers work things different ways such as focusing on different parts of men's technique. Quote Link to comment
citibob
What do you hope to get by going away next summer? What is your current school like, and how would you expect the summer to be different? Quote Link to comment
Guest boydancer05
at my current school the summer classes are fairly large and i am usually less stressed out and more focused on my dancing during the summer. Quote Link to comment
citibob
So you are looking for a summer program that would: 1. Offer smaller classes than at your current school. 2. Offer a greater quantity of classes than you have right now, allowing you to focus completely on dance for the summer. Is this correct? What level of training are you at now? How long have you studied? Where are you studying during the year? How big are the summer classes at your current school? How old are you? What are your aspirations? [You don't have to answer any of these questions if you don't want to.] Quote Link to comment

Mel Johnson
There are problems with seeking small class sizes anywhere in summer. Because kids are out of school, and like you, feeling the constraints of cabin fever, they reach out to any and every far-flung enterprise that can be sought, even internationally. The result is that summer classes almost everywhere (not Australia or New Zealand or South Africa, though; it's winter there!) are nearly filled to overflowing, even with the best efforts of managements to keep class size reasonable. As to class quantity, usually an intensive will attempt to get as many classes for the student as the student can stand, one way or another. It might be wisest to research the sorts of things you want to learn (repertoire? men's work? partnering? other disciplines?) and build a "shopping list" that fits YOUR list! Check the Young Dancer boards for accounts of summer intensives, and also the lists of schools offering SIs, and what their projected offerings are. You can also check in Archives to see reports of other students facing different schools - just make sure that your viewing options are out to the max, to "show all threads". Let us help you! Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted November 10, 2002 Administrators Report Share Posted November 10, 2002 Knock knock! Female moderator putting in two cents here ;) boydancer, you are in a school with people who are exceptionally well qualified to advise you on your career options and plan of study. Have you spoken to Clara Cravey and/or Steve Bruhle? Quote Link to comment
Mel Johnson
Great idea! For anyone seeking advice on Summer Intensives, the best advice is probably near at hand - your own teachers! Ask them what they think would be the best summer activity for you. Quote Link to comment
citibob
Doesn't Houston Ballet have a well respected SI? There are many good reasons to NOT travel far to a SI if you can avoid it (oh, but that's SO boring ) In my experience with one SI, class size varied from year to year. For two years it was 25. The next year it was about half that size. Funny thing... OK, I'm stepping out of this one, I don't really know anything... Quote Link to comment
Guest boydancer05
I haven't asked them yet because I first have to decide if I am going to go to a summer program this coming summer and when I make that decision I am hoping they will be happy to help me because they have before. Mel Johnson
I consider it on the highest order of probabilities that you'll get some of your best help from them, if you decide to do a summer intensive (and please do, whether at Houston or anywhere else! ). Quote Link to comment
citibob
What are reasons you WOULD do a SI this summer, and what are reasons you would NOT do one? Quote Link to comment
Guest boydancer05
i can only think of reasons why i would wanna dance this summer. going somewhere different is another story but some that come to the top of my head are to get more exposure, explore different styles and teachers and to meet new people while dancing alot more and improving in my weak aspects of ballet.
