I am 14 years old and live in NY. I'm intrested in going to a summer intensive this summer. I know that the best ones are SAB and Joffrey, but i was wondering what other summer intensives are good in my area. Also, if anyone has ever went to a summer intensive in NY, i would like to know what it was like. I would appreciate any help you can offer.

:) Thanks,

Ballet Princess

P.S. I was also wondering what the auditions are like and how long I should attend.

In addition to the two you mentioned, there are also intensives at ABT, DTH, Ballet Academy East, and Studio Maestro.

Auditions are a class, usually grouped by ages. The schedules for auditions will be out in the Jan. issue of Dance and Pointe magazines, which comes out in the middle of December. There will also be some information on the various programs available at their web sites, and here on the board under Summer Intensive Survey Results. That should be available the end of this month or beginning of Dec.

As to how long you should attend, that's easy - as long as you can of course! :)

Thanks for your help! :)

I also heard of Steps on Broadway and Broadway Dance Center. Are those good schools? Also i feel silly asking this....... but what does DTH stand for?

DTH means Dance Theater of Harlem.

Steps on Broadway and the Broadway Dance Center offer summer programs, which should not be confused with their open class programs. Steps is ballet oriented, but Broadway Dance is more related to musical comedy and such dance.

Ballet Academy East also offers a summer program lasting two weeks, but there is no performance at the end of the program, understandable because of the brevity of the term. It's good to have a performance associated with a summer intensive. Learning choreography, preferably real active repertory, is a valuable asset to a dance education program.

Thanks again! :)

One more question, I've been on pointe for almost 2 years. How advanced do they expect me to be, both on pointe and with technique?

P.S. I looked up ABT and they need 2 letters of recomendation. What do they look for in these letters? Also, I am currently attending a performing arts high school where dance is my major and i take 10 hrs. a week of ballet there. Do these hours count for applications, and can i get a letter of recomendation from my ballet teacher at school?

Summer intensives are usually constituted on a multi-level basis, so different technical abilities and strengths, as well as weaknesses, can be addressed. You may take one level of ballet technique, but be in a pointe class with an entirely different group of students. Or you may stay with a single peer group thoughout the classes you take. It all depends on the management of the course.

Letters of recommendation are entirely pro forma when I give them: "I hereby certify that I am a regular instructor of (insert name) in ballet technique, and believe that (s/he) is qualified for intensive study." Or something very much to that terse effect.

A resume, if asked for, should include your training history, which would include your current frequency of study.

Are you open to suggestions for non-NYC schools in NYS for summer intensives?

I looked up the New York State Summer School of the Arts (NYSSSA) website and it seems like a really good school! Thanks for your help!
