Search tips for Amazon

Recommended Posts

If you've ever searched for "ballet" books on Amazon, you have noticed that for every adult book, you will get a dozen Angelina Ballerina books. Now, books for kids are very important, but sometimes one would like to find the books that are NOT for kids.

I wrote Amazon and asked if they could do a non-children's filter (only fair, since you can search for 8 year olds, 12 years olds, etc.) I got this response:

Although there are no general ways to screen out juvenile books, you can do so using a "Power Search." To conduct a Power Search, click on the "Search" link in the top (green) crossbar of any Bookstore page.

Then scroll down to the bottom of the page. I conducted the

following Power Search to obtain the results you're looking for:

subject: ballet and not juvenile

For more information about Power Searching, please see:

Tip 2, that I posted on another thread.

You can sort results in a search for "ballet" (or anything else) by date of publication. This is a fun way to find out what books have not yet been published and their expected publication date.

I'm going to make this a sticky. If people find other search tips, please post them.

And please remember that if you are going to buy books through Amazon to click on the link that's conveniently located at the top of every page of this site. We get a 5% commission if you buy from Amazon, and half that if you buy from Amazon affiliates. You have to enter the site through our banner at the beginning of each shopping session for us to get credit for it.

Thank you :D

When you search, you can put quotation marks around a phrase, so the search will be for "exact phrase," rather than "both words" but not in order. For example, "modern dance," "ballet biography."

Alexandra,

Is Amazon.co.uk an Amazon affiliate (sorry, if this is a stupid question but English is not my mother tongue, so I'm, not exactly sure how "wide" that term is)? I have to order from European Amazons because of tax and customs reasons, and only rarely will order from .com, if they have something .co.uk or some other Europe-based Amazon doesn't have.

So will you get the comission if I go through that banner and go from .com to .co.uk?

This may belong more on one of the SI boards, but every summer, I buy books through Amazon for my daughter and have them shipped directly to her at her SI. We have also bought a birthday gift for a boy she knows who is year round at SAB and had it shipped directly to his dorm, already gift wrapped. I have always found delivery to be fast and reliable, and prices are good. Amazon is great! (Sorry for the commercial :blushing: )

Balletmom, no problem about the commercial! It helps us, as long as people get there from our banner! :blushing:

snowtiger, the best book would be Classical Ballet Technique, by Gretchen Ward Warren. It is a big book with excellent photos, and describes all of the steps and positions in the ballet vocabulary. It is about $35 dollars I think. There is also Gail Grant's Technical Manual and Dictionary of classical ballet, which is only $5. It has all of the vocabulary, but is a small book with only a few illustrations and no photos, but it's still a very good one to have and easy to carry around in your dance bag!

Janina, I'm not sure about getting to Amazon.co.uk from here, but you could try it and see!
