B+(not the grade, the position)

What is the origin of B+? Does it have a french name? I remember when I was younger, I missed the class where the teacher introduced the name B+. During the next class, I thought the teacher was grading us on how we were standing when she was telling us B+. It's a pretty odd name, considering everything else in ballet...where did it come from?
